Stanley Clarke and Hiromi with PUBLIQuartet at Stanford Live

Four-time Grammy Award–winner Stanley Clarke is a living legend jazz bass virtuoso. In 1972, he founded the groundbreaking jazz-rock fusion band Return to Forever alongside Chick Corea. Now collaborating with the innovative pianist Hiromi—who also performed and recorded with Corea—and joined by the PUBLIQuartet, they pay tribute to the late great keyboardist with a program of Corea’s works and original compositions he inspired.

“Chick was like a brother to me,” Clarke says. “What really created the bond between us was our similar beliefs in the power of the individual to create the most beautiful and inspiring art—the great healer—for people.”

NEA Jazz Master and four-time Grammy Award winner Stanley Clarke joins visionary pianist Hiromi for a heartfelt tribute to Chick Corea. The program features Corea’s works and new compositions inspired by the late, legendary keyboardist—a 27-time Grammy winner with deep musical ties to both artists. Clarke and Corea were longtime collaborators in the pioneering fusion group Return to Forever and Hiromi’s own decades-long connection with Corea began when he invited the then 17-year-old pianist to perform with him in Tokyo.

Honoring those shared histories, Clarke and Hiromi are joined by the acclaimed PUBLIQuartet, whose inventive improvisation and boundary-pushing approach to contemporary classical, jazz and world chamber music bring an expansive new dimension to this tribute.

Stop/Time Festival is a two-day, multi-venue, multi-artist spring festival produced by Hancher Auditorium and devoted to innovation and independence in contemporary music and the arts. This is a festival of discovery—opening our ears and minds to new sounds, ideas, and possibilities.

Presented in spaces throughout downtown Iowa City and across the University of Iowa campus, the festival highlights the region’s century-long tradition of creative experimentation. Musicians will present work spanning psych, jazz, creative music, contemporary classical, avant-garde performance, alternative folk, ambient, noise, and electronic sound. Alongside them, writers and interdisciplinary artists will offer readings, activations, and collaborations that extend the conversation across art forms.

This concert is a culmination of music and artists that have opened their creative minds to new possibilities and paradigms for the tuba. Bob Stewart is a critical point of intersection from which so many others have branched. His work has inspired tubists to explore, question, and create, forwarding themselves to lead their own ensembles and helping to establish new tuba repertoire.

Featuring performances by Henry Threadgill’s renowned ensemble Very, Very Circus, Heavy Metal Duo, First Line Band, and Grammy nominated string quartet PUBLIQuartet.

Ensembles will play the music of Bob Stewart, Curtis Stewart, Charles Mingus, Henry Threadgill, Lester Bowie, and Arthur Blythe.

Featuring the world-premiere of George Lewis’s latest String Quartet 3.5 “Great Migrations” commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation; as well as works by Vijay Iyer, Henry Threadgill and CAC founding member and Director A. Spencer Barefield who will join on guitar. Following up their two GRAMMY®-nominated projects, What Is American: Rhythm Nation celebrates American rhythmic traditions as expressions of bodily autonomy and tacit history keeping. From the African rhythms and fiddle techniques that propel Trevor Weston’s Juba to the iconic grooves of Janet Jackson, the program includes improvisations on the beat breaks of Daniel Bernard Roumain’s Hip-Hop Etudes and original works by PUBLIQuartet, alongside new works by Pulitzer Prize finalist Jlin, Mazz Swift, Eddie Venegas, and Jeff Scott, commissioned with the support of a 2024 Chamber Music America Artistic Projects grant. Each of these new works evokes a distinct rhythmic world, reflecting the plurality of American movement(s) and protecting the unspoken spirit of their lineage’s narratives. PUBLIQuartet’s 2024 CMA Artistic Projects grant is supported by the Howard Gilman Foundation.

A celebration of the music of Hancher's 2024–2025 composer-in-residencefeaturing the composer herself.

The PUBLIQuartet–of which Jessie Montgomery was a founding member—won the 2013 Concert Artists Guild New Music/New Places Award. In 2019, the ensemble won Chamber Music America's prestigious Visionary Award in recognition of their commitment to excellence and innovation. Embracing improvisation, PUBLIQuartet mixes genres while shining a light on American multiculturalism.

Montgomery, who is Hancher's 2024–2025 composer-in-residence, was Musical America's Composer of the Year in 2023. Her compositions weave classical music together with poetry, improvisation, vernacular music, and a vibrant social consciousness.

Jessie Montgomery: The 2024–2025 Hancher composer-in-residence
The winner of the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Jessie Montgomery was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Mead Composer-In-Residence for three years beginning in July 2021. The Washington Post describes her work as “turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life.”

Throughout Hancher's 2024–2025 season, Montgomery will perform twice at Hancher and will do intensive work with students in the University of Iowa School of Music.
